 Fast UTF-8 to UTF-16 Conversion Patented

This thread on linux-utf8 is bitterly funny. Apparently a professor at SFU has written a patent-pending fast UTF-8 to UTF-16 converter.

He has even got philosophical about a patent-based Open Source technology transfer model!!

His motivations are even more funny. Typical of academia of course. Just imagine a company paying patent royalties for their UTF-8 to UTF-16 transcoding code...

I have an even faster method for UTF-8 to UTF-16 conversion. I am still working on it but the current prototype looks like that:

utf16_t utf8_to_16( utf8_t c ) {
return c*2 ;
}

Funny story. I'm really happy someone told him off about the patents right away, as I agree it's only giving legitimacy for something fundamentally broken.

Well I'm sure it is UTF-8 to UCS-2, not UTF-16. Pretty lame either way. And the first person that tries to claim that UCS-2 and UTF-16 are the same thing get his programmer's license revoked.
