Fast UTF-8 to UTF-16 Conversion Patented

This thread on linux-utf8 is bitterly funny. Apparently a professor at SFU has written a patent-pending fast UTF-8 to UTF-16 converter.

He has even got philosophical about a patent-based Open Source technology transfer model!!

His motivations are even more funny. Typical of academia of course. Just imagine a company paying patent royalties for their UTF-8 to UTF-16 transcoding code...

Yay GNOME 2.18 and RHEL 5!

So it so hectic a week that I'm just recovering from email and planet load and remembering that in fact I didn't post about GNOME 2.18 and RHEL 5 releases, coinciding last Wednesday. Anyway, Yay!

On Wednesday night we also went to SkuleNite. Andrew Overholt was playing, and it was hilarious.

Had a great time at the GNOME 2.18 Release Party. Met a few new interesting people, including my currently favorite cairo hacker (hi Jeff), as well as the usual suspects (except for Ben who was missed)...

 Reliability, my dear Watson

Just got three "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" messages. Turn out to be for three messages I sent to the linux-utf8 mailing list on 8 Feb 2005. Baffled.

(Currently in Amsterdam Schipol Airport en route to Tehran for two weeks.)

 GNOME 2.18 Release Party

With cairo 1.4.0 release candidate finally out I'm getting back to blogging.

Reminds me that GNOME 2.18 will be released in about ten days. So, here we go:

Bring your laptops, Bring your GNOME-powered phones:

All GNOME (and related technology) developers are invited to my GNOME 2.18 Release Party on Friday March 16th, 2007, Downtown Toronto. Drop me a line for details.

More parties here.
