The two combined is what I&#39;m seeing here. But you have a fair point. The times look unrealistically high. I looked into it and seems like in this scenario the strace overhead is very nonneglibigle. Without strace it takes 15ms to init, and 40ms to init+sort. With strace, it&#39;s 120ms. So yeah, I was a factor of three off there :(. Thanks a lot for pointing out.<BR/><BR/>@Francois: I modified /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop to run a shell script that I wrote. The shell script starts bootchart and then runs /usr/bin/gnome-session. You also need a way to stop the bootchart. You can add something like ( sleep 30; /sbin/bootchartd stop &amp; ) in your shell script.<BR/><BR/>@Anonymous: Fontconfig is not loading fonts. It&#39;s loading caches. It needs to load the caches to know what fonts you have installed...<BR/><BR/>@Anders: Great! I checked the code out. Looks good already.
